Let's revisit the origins of Broken Promises with their captivating third collection, "Dancing with Death," launched in the fall of 2017.
This collection not only marked the expansion of their product line with the introduction of their first denim series, "Stitch & Rip," but also deepens the brand's narrative with the introduction of their now iconic slogan, "Words mean nothing and promises are never kept."
Originating from a simple scribble on a napkin by founder Mandee Bence, the "Wish Things Were Different" graphic became a central theme of the collection, embodying the brand's commitment to emotional authenticity. This collection brought a unique Western flair to the lineup, blending traditional motifs with Broken Promises' signature edgy style.
This was also the second collaboration between Broken Promises and the renowned director CBFOUR, known for his ability to visually translate the brand's core messages.
Co-founder Jason Rotramel elaborates on the evolution of their branding, "That motto always existed, but we started really branding it on clothing and incorporating it into the collections to further drive what the brand is all about. It was always on the tag, on the clip, label on the hip as, like, a hidden message. But with this collection, we kind of brought it to the forefront and showcased what the feeling was behind some of the pieces."
The launch video, directed by CBFOUR, perfectly captures the collection's Western vibe and the existential themes that challenge viewers to confront and embrace the darker aspects of the human experience.
