Broken Promises: 2017 Debut Collection

In 2017 Broken Promises unveiled their premier capsule collection with a cinematic look book that introduced the brand’s penchant for bold, emotionally driven, unisex apparel.

While the range featured several silhouettes that would later become staples in the ever growing lineup of highly sought after graphics, the designs themselves weren’t the initial focus-or at least they weren’t meant to be.

“We really wanted to showcase our brand in a different, less commercial light in an environment that was relatable to the people we wanted to speak to.” says Jason Rotramel, who co-owns the brand with Mandee Bence, who adds, “Broken Promises is an emotional, alternative brand. We really wanted to build a community around that, rather than just sell t-shirts to people”.

The look book, which was launched in May of that year was the first of many collaborations between Broken Promises and CBFOUR, a director and videographer whose list of credits include everyone from Wiz Khalifa to the now infamous Cookies brand.

Speaking about the artistic direction behind the video, Rotramel states that the partnership was a “dream" adding, “The concept really came from [Sebastian]. The end product with all the B-roll cuts and the kids stealing and causing trouble all came from his ability to understand the brand immediately and bring our vision to life.”

The collection dropped with a remarkable buzz, capturing the attention of many, including Youtuber JC Caylen, who wore the Thornless tee while live streaming to his 3 million subscribers.

While the products from their 2017 debut sold out almost immediately, the imagery, messaging, and community created from each piece exists today in every Broken Promises release.
